I am looking into replacing my stereo receiver for 2000 Mitsubishi Galant which has the 7 speaker infinity system. I looked nearly and noticed there’s this business called “pre-amp channel” and they vary from 2, 4, 6 and etc.
Three questions concerning to this.

1. Reading some of the web stuff, it looks like these are like the “input” channels that a home receiver so that more I have, more stuff I can add to. Or is it related to output? (like more I have, more speakers it will use such as 5.1 vs. 7.2 home theater system?)

2. I didn’t add no matter what business to my car stereo system (i.e. no with-market stuff extra). I just have the 7-speaker system which the car had. How many channel of this “pre-amp” would I need to have? Does it relate to how many speakers I have? (i.e. if I have 4 speakers – 1 on each door, maybe 4 channel?)

3. Will more “pre-amp” give me any better? Or once I pass certain number of channels, then rest will be just unused? If that’s the case, I am looking for that “certain number of channels” which will be used.

Your help will be appreciated.
Thank you.

go to crutchfield and look at stereos. generally language if the vehicle comes have a supply of with and infinity system all the wiring will be ran through a wiring harnesses that plug into the rear of the car stereo. when you replace the stereo you can just buy a harness that will connect with the have a supply of wiring and the aftermarket stereo with minimal work and knowledge. if this sounds like another language then go to crutchfield.com they have a lot of in rank that will help.

as far the preamp outputs go, you only need those if you are hooking up an aftermarket amp in your system.

I have a ’99 Montero Sport that has the infinity system as well.
I never spent a whole lot of time trying to decipher the way it works b/c my wife drives it and she’s pleased with the signal.
But from what I can gather you can buy an adapter and use it to either replace the have a supply of head unit – maintenance the infinity amp and speakers, OR keep the have a supply of head unit and replace the amp and speakers.

As for the supplies of your HU – If you want to retain the have a supply of speakers and amp all your new HU NEEDS is the ordinary one pair of pre-outs, but you would only have weigh (left/aptly) control, not fade (front/rear) control. You’d use a pair of 1m/2f y cables (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021803&p_id=663&seq=1&format=2) to give you your 2 left, and 2 aptly connections for the adapter.

To give you weigh AND fade you’d need the HU to have 2 pairs of pre-outs, front (l & r) and rear (l & r).

You wouldn’t get any subsidy by having more than 2 pairs except you have plans of adding a subwoofer in the future.
