Hi guys,
I’ve recently been looking at 5.1 channel speakers for my laptop and have come around some cheap home theater systems, the main one is this, Yamaha NS-SP5800BL. It’s a home theater speaker system and was just wondering if I needed any special relations to plug it into my laptop.
thanks

Answer by Real Z
It depends on the relations on your laptop, but your laptop doubtless do not have the right relations for surround signal.

Hello sir,

You would need a device that takes U.S.B. and puts it to some type of digital output like a digital copper coax or a toslink fiber-optic tie. A excellent one for your scenario would be this Creative Signal Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 SB1090.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Creative+-+Signal+Blaster+X-Fi+Surround+5.1+External+USB+Signal+Card/8953705.p?id=1216423921440&skuId=8953705&st=signal%20card&cp=1&lp=1

You’ll also need a standard toslink-type fiber-optic cable. You can get one of those pretty cheap. They are available in standard retail stores, but are generally cheaper on line. You can get on from a house like Monoprice.com for a part of the cost that you’d pay in a retail store.

http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10229

Keep in mind that if you want to play things in surround signal, there are numerous things that all have to be competent of producing it. The source being your computer and the signal card I listed, the tie being the toslink fiber-optic cable, and the show being the surround signal system are all competent of surround signal, but the fourth part that matters, the media, has yet to be addressed. If you’re plotting on streaming movies from Netflix or Blockbuster, then the movies will be in surround signal. If you are plotting on downloading movies from less than reputable sources, then some of them will only be in stereo despite having your surround signal covered.

Looking to get a PS3 for blu-ray movies and want a nice, yet moderately priced 7.1 home theater speaker system. I hear Onkyo is a excellent brand… any other suggestions? Or am I better off with just a 5.1 system???

Thanks for the help everyone!!!

Answer by Donald D
7.1 SYSTEM IN A SMALL ROOM WILL MAKE YOUR EARS BLEED!!5.1 is more than enough and will be cheaper, and use less power!

Answer by Jason M
i have just made this pronouncement my self, for my ps3 and room, i went for a higher quality 5.1 system over a 7.1, simply for the better signal quality and features. The 7.1 only had 2 extra speakers and was more expensive

onkyo is a excellent brand but i went for a better yamaha 5.1 system

Answer by trainmaster77
what is moderately priced? some blu-ray is native 7.1 now… so if you buy 5.1 youre already starting behind the times .. dont listen to those assclowns … in a year youd spank yourself for not getting 7.1.

how huge is the room … the guy that said it will make your ears bleed obviously knows small/nothing about home theater.

follow these guidelines:
1:how vital is function …. repeat … HOW IMPORTANT IS FUNCTION
2: IF application is more vital than function (meaning you dont want hideous speakers and wires everywhere then you doubtless want something very small and slightly noticeable in your room).
3: Take the time to reckon out everywhere your speakers will go (vital) because once you take the time to wire everything correctly … it will take twice as long to take the wires out and go everything accordingly)
4. Once you figure out a setup you will truly be pleased with ..then start on the price … in other words ..dont start with a budget of say 100 bucks ..that limits yourself in ways you would not like
5. after you find a setup you like ..and is somewhat future-proof ..then start budgeting …. in-wall speakers are always a excellent choice for the rear 2 channels in a 7.1 system.

summary .. go over your room … youll need 2 front, 1 center, 2 surrounds, 2 rears, and a sub … figure all that out first … then youll find what the right pricepoint is on what youll be pleased with.
